I can empathize with you. If you are a new writer who has published a few articles, or you are someone who is just thinking to get started in your writing journey - lack of ideas is normal.
I am here to tell you the things you need to know.
Tip 1 : Your first book or your first article is probably going to suck. (No offense)
It's highly probable that it's not going to be very good, but you have to write it anyway. You can't write books without writing your first book. Fear of failure is the lamest excuse ever. You are an aspiring writer. You should know better. Embrace that it is going to suck and just go ahead and write your first manuscript. Thinking about writing or wanting to write isn't writing. You gotta write. Period.
Tip 2 : Nothing is original. Don't be delusional.
Stop pressurizing and depressing yourself over this preconceived notion that your idea has to be perfect or original or winning. If you are worried about the fact that another author might have written the same story, I guarantee you, they have. Yes...!!
What brings an original spark to a novel is how you write it. It's not your story that's original. It's your storytelling. Your way of narration makes all the difference. Writing is a process. It's only while writing that you'll learn the skill of elegantly twisting the tropes and making them obsessive.
Tip 3: No One really cares!!
Stop thinking that your writing journey is going to end the day people read your first book. They don't care. It might suck. They might feel the same, but that does not harm you in any way. Because now, you are at least a writer, and you have established your image it does not end there. That's natural. Let go of that desperate need for validation.
Tip 4 : No one cares about your personal life.
Your fascinating life story might not be that interesting to the strangers. Unless you are famous or have had something incredibly dramatic happened to you, no one cares about your memoir. Get off of reddit. No one care if it's plain, if it's in line with the plot or if you are two years old. Your words are the only bits that matter. You don't. If at all, that's definitely through your words.
Tip 5 : You are wasting time in making excuses. Make stories.
Writer's block is an illusion. It doesn't really exist. You have to admit that writing is hard. It's one thing to be passionate about telling stories. It's entirely another thing to be actually being able to do it. Being a writer, both these characters need to be in sync with each other. You can't always write when you are inspired. You need to form a writing habit. You need to push yourself to write even when you are not feeling like it.
(P.S. - Mental health is real, and you need to take that into consideration. Every once in a while, not wanting to write is a sign that you need a break, but the rest of the times, it's not real.)
Tip 6 : Brainstorming endlessly isn't writing.
Asking questions on Reddit or Quora about writing isn't writing. You can brainstorm ideas for weeks, months, years preparing to write, but none of it is writing. You have to actually write to have written. Stop procrastinating. It is a lonely process, but hey we care as much as you do, if not more.
Tip 7 : Don't start writing for money or external validation.
If your words are inspired by the idea that they are going to be the harbingers of solid cash and fame for you, then you shouldn't really write. You have to like the idea and the process of writing. You have to love writing even when you hate it. Writing should be the idea of fun for you even when it becomes torture, and might I add, it mostly will.
If you are reading till this point, you probably just don't like the idea of being a writer, but love to write. Throw away all the excuses and get on writing. Start your first post and get your journey started.
